State officials are hoping to contain any worries about identity theft after more than 1,200 mailings containing the Social Security numbers of state welfare recipients were sent to the wrong addresses.
The mix-up happened at a state printing plant, where a paper jam on a mail inserter threw off the operation and caused some recipients’ paperwork to be stuffed into envelopes labeled with the addresses of other welfare recipients.
More than 2,800 packets were mailed Aug. 18 to the wrong addresses, including 1,284 that contained Social Security numbers. Recipients began calling county welfare offices several days later to report the mistake, a Department of Public Welfare official said.

Wall Street headed for a higher open Tuesday, a day after a big pullback, as investors awaited key readings on new home sales and consumer confidence.
Investors expect the Commerce Department report to show new home sales dropped again in July, falling nearly 1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 525,000 from June’s 530,000, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson/IFR. That would be the eighth decline in the past nine months. The report is due at 10 a.m. EDT.
Reducing the inventory of new homes has been difficult as mortgage rates have increased and banks have tightened lending standards due to the credit crunch.

California authorities have rebuffed a request to investigate whether Sen. Charles Schumer helped fuel IndyMac Bancorp Inc.’s collapse by expressing concerns about the major mortgage lender’s soundness.
The California Attorney General’s office said in a letter Thursday that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to investigate the New York Democrat under a state law against making false statements or spreading rumors about a bank’s solvency.
Schumer’s statements in June 26 letters to bank regulators were true and apparently drawn from public information, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Greene wrote. He also noted that the U.S. Constitution protects members of Congress from being prosecuted or sued for remarks made in their official capacity.

There is a lot to be done if you are thinking about donating your organs. Organ donation isn’t an incredibly simple process. You need to take the time to inform your close family members of your decision. Otherwise, they may not take the necessary steps at the hospital to confirm consent. That little note on your driver’s license isn’t always enough to make sure that it happens. If you are considering body donation, you should take the early steps much more seriously. It’s a larger commitment that your family should obviously be aware of beforehand.
If you are planning to do both, you need to put a little bit of extra effort into it. You can donate your body to science while also donating your organs. The necessary parties just need to know ahead of time so that they may work around each other as necessary. There is enough confusion around a hospital. Make their job a bit easier by keeping everyone in the loop.
